E Scooters |

On Friday afternoon the Neighbourhood Team undertook targeted patrols of the Meadows play area and pump track at Boscoppa, St Austell in response to reports of nuisance non road legal pit bikes and E motorbikes at the location. Whilst one rider of an E motorbike wasn't keen on stopping for police, Sgt Easter did stop a young person riding the pictured E scooter on Boscoppa Road. We appreciate that this isn't the crime of the century however there has been a number of reported incidents both regionally and nationally with both riders and pedestrians being seriously injured and killed in E scooter collisions. It is against the law to ride an E scooter on a public road, cycle path or pavement. The only place an E scooter can be used is on private land with the landowner’s permission. E scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), so they are treated as motor vehicles. This makes them subject to the same legal requirements to have an MOT, tax and insurance. The rider is also required to have a full UK driving licence. The E scooter has been seized under powers available to police under Section 165A of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
